Jeremy Mullings' Wedding Reception Afters
We’re back at it with another episode of Post Up Radio. While we love featuring people who work outside of the music spectrum, we also have to give some shine to the homies who dedicate their careers to working on timeless music.
This week’s episode is hand-picked by our friend Jeremy Mullings who’s an A&R at September Recordings. If you want to check out what he’s been working on, look no further than Terry Presume’s new single “Did Me Wrong”. In addition to his music endeavors, Jeremy is a certified hooper. You want to clear out when he’s coming down the lane, and on the other end you will get your shot blocked. He’s also a big Knicks fan, and has been riding for them through the trenches (any time between the Patrick Ewing-era and this current season).

You work at September, management company responsible for the careers of Adele, King Krule, Rex Orange County and several others. Can you tell us about your new signing Terry Presume?
We recently started our label, September Recordings and we signed Terry around July of last year. He’s an immensely talented, prolific individual that doesn’t exist in any specific world. He makes songs that have incredible replay value and relatability. He carries everything that I look for in an artist. He’s empathetic and sensitive, but as soon as he gets to writing and recording, that’s when you can tell he’s most comfortable. He has a ton of music coming, and hasn’t even scratched the surface.
Do you find that you separate your listening for work and for pleasure?
Throughout “work hours” I’m listening to music for work. Stuff that I’m evaluating, discovering or working on. It doesn’t feel as leisurely and fun as when I’m picking what to listen to on my own time. When I discover new music during work hours that really speaks to me, and I have a genuine connection with, those moments are the most special.
How do you feel about the current state of the music industry? Anything you’re excited about? Anything you hate?
I’m excited about the crop of younger kids who’ve utilized advances in technology to make their own songs as the barrier to entry in music has been reduced. While that’s a great thing, it also led to a lot of mid, but I’m very excited about the artists who’ve put in their hours of training, but haven’t necessarily put all their music out yet. I love when people take time in between releases, and focus on making art for art’s sake. In contrast, I’m definitely frustrated by the pressure put on artists to constantly be putting music out, and not spending the time honing their craft. So many artists end up scrambling and putting out so much music they don’t care about just to feel like they’re staying above water.
In what ways do you feel like music right now lacks honesty or transparency?
Good artists are able to be 100% honest on tracks, but that’s lacking so much because of the volume of music that artists are pressured to put out. Many artists say the same things over and over because they haven’t had any new experiences. The current climate doesn’t allow artists to go out and have those new moments that’ll give them new ideas to talk about in their songs. People get stuck in their own worlds because they don’t have enough time to go out and experience the world, gaining new influences.
How do you feel about the influence of data in music discovery?
It’s a good thing, but also used in the wrong ways can be extremely dangerous. A&Rs might only focus in on one pocket while ignoring the other possibilities out there. Technology is best used as an aid, but not as a crutch. It doesn’t tell the whole story.
You’re an avid Knicks fan, they’re currently the best they’ve been in years. What’s so exciting about this year’s team? What does the future have in store for them over the next few years?
The Knicks are primarily the same team as last year, the difference is that now they have a coach that actually holds the players accountable. The other huge point is Julius Randle’s ascent to all-stardom, and taking on more of a leadership role. He really stepped up. Outside of that, there are all these classic, gritty Knicks role players. It’s very emblematic of the 90s teams that played hard defense. Guys like RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.
They could be a perennial playoff contender if they make the right moves in free agency, maybe making some light trades as well. They could take it to the Eastern Conference Finals in the next couple years.
How long have you been a Knicks fan?
I’ve been a fan of theirs ever since I could remember watching basketball. I grew up in New Jersey, but my dad grew up a Knicks fan and you want to root for your dad’s team. It was fun to watch the Nets be so successful in the early 2000s, but I always wanted the Knicks to be better.
You almost played Division 3 NCAA basketball, can you tell us a bit about the recruiting process?
Because we had scouts at our games, I had the opportunity to play in front of them, and while I was only a sixth man, I still got good minutes. They were mostly D2 and D3 scouts, but they’d talk to you, send you emails and letters, keeping up with your progress. I got a D3 offer from a school in Pennsylvania called Arcadia University, but ended up opting not to play college ball.
Who were the best players you faced in high school?
By far the three best opponents I played against were Ben Simmons, D’Angelo Russell and Joel Embiid. Real studs.
